Impacts of an INtervention TO increase MOBility in older hospitalised medical patients (INTOMOB): a cluster randomised controlled trial
Description:
2. Aims

The overall objective of the INTOMOB project is to develop and test a multilevel patient-empowering intervention that helps patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs) overcome barriers to increase mobility during hospitalisation, and thus improve outcomes of older adults. To reach our goals, we will 1) characterise patient and HCP barriers and needs to increase hospital mobility; 2) develop an intervention addressing these barriers and needs to increase hospital mobility; 3) test the efficacy of the intervention in a randomised controlled trial in 3 hospitals in Fribourg, Bern and Baden; and 4) develop a toolkit to implement and disseminate the intervention if it is successful.

3. Scientific and societal context of the research project

Although most older patients hospitalised on a medical ward could walk independently, 83% of their hospital stay is spent in bed. Low mobility is associated with adverse outcomes, including institutionalisation and death. However, interventions to increase mobility have not succeeded.

Our scalable intervention could overcome patient and HCP barriers to increase hospital mobility. As the aging multimorbid population fills hospital wards, low mobility will create an increasingly pressing problem. This novel intervention could significantly reduce adverse outcomes of low mobility and reduce healthcare costs.
