The Effects of JUUL and Combustible Cigarette Use on Indices of Heart Rate Variability
Description: Cigarette use affects sympathetic nervous activity. However, this association has not been explored with JUUL, pod-based electronic cigarettes that contain high nicotine levels. We seek to explore how JUUL affects autonomic regulation through analyzing various indices of heart rate variability (HRV), a predictor of cardiovascular risk. We will recruit healthy young participants aged 18-45 who are either tobacco nonusers, JUUL users, or combustible cigarette users. Using SphygmoCor, we will measure parameters of HRV at baseline and after 10 minutes of structured product use.
