Autophagy and Mitochondrial Permeability in Aging and Longevity
Description: Autophagy, or “self eating” is the process by which all cells clear defective organelles and molecules. Autophagy is generally thought to be advantageous to prevent disease and promote healthy aging, however, we determined that autophagy is not always beneficial, and have identified cellular factors that are critical in determining whether autophagy is good or bad for longevity. This project is relevant to public health because it will define the mechanisms by which these cellular factors modulate the effect of autophagy on health, allowing us to identify the next generation of therapeutic targets to reduce the impact of many human diseases and to promote healthy aging.
