Molecular Assessment of Cause and Consequence of Cellular Senescence in Diverse Midbrain Cell Types in Parkinson's Disease

Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE The proposed research is relevant to public health because revealing if cellular senescence is a general mechanism in dopamine neurons leading to parkinsonism is critical for the understanding of Parkinson’s disease and age- related neurodegeneration. This study aims to identify factors and pathways that cause cellular senescence in dopamine neurons and other cell types of the midbrain, to ultimately unravel how senescence spreads between cell types and how it would be possible to interfere and prevent neurodegeneration. Thus, this proposal is relevant to the part of NIH’s mission that pertains to fostering fundamental creative discoveries and innovative research strategies as a basis for ultimately protecting health.
