Pharmacological agents that block the Sirtuin1 and Deleted in Breast Cancer 1 interaction
Description: The fountain of youth is an idea that depicts the reversal of age, a concept that many have unsuccessfully attempted in the field of medicine. There are many conditions that have aging as a major risk factor, including widely prevalent diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. The aging process consists of many components, allowing for a wide variety of methods to explore anti-aging. One promising target is Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a protein in our cells that mediates life extension. While lucrative at first, many attempts have been made at directly harnessing SIRT1's life extension ability for practical uses, but none have been successful. We propose an alternative approach to utilize SIRT1 by focusing on Deleted in Breast Cancer 1 (DBC1), another protein that stops SIRT1 from its life-extension effects. Our goal is to fully utilize SIRT1 by blocking its native inhibitor, which can be done by developing drugs that stop them from interacting in the first place. We believe this is a superior approach for increased longevity, and will aid in many diseases prevalent in the later stages of life.
