ARGOS - Automatic Recognition of irreGularities in the OesophaguS
Description: Esophageal cancer is one of the most lethal tumors worldwide and an increasing amount of people are diagnosed with it. When esophageal cancer is diagnosed, it is often in a late stage and only half of the patients undergo curative surgical removal of the esophagus. When discovered in an early stage, it can be treated minimally invasive without removing the esophagus) with excellent outcome. Patients with Barrett’s esophagus have an increased risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma. Therefore, they undergo regular endoscopy for early cancer detection. However, early cancers in Barrett’s esophagus are subtle and difficult to detect. Our research focuses on a tool that can aid in early discovery of cancers during endoscopy: a computer-aided detection system. This is the first system in its kind, and it has the potential to increase early detection of esophageal cancer and thereby avoid surgery and improve survival rate.
