"Modulation of the Cardiovascular Properties Through Exercise, Intermittent Fasting, and Ketone Supplementation"
Description: Risk factors such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, alcohol consumption, tobacco use, and obesity all increase the chance of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is responsible for 25% of deaths in Canada. Lifestyle changes including diet and exercise interventions can be used to lower such risks. However, most people may find difficulty in utilizing such interventions. Thus, finding novel approaches to reduce this burden and improve the efficacy of each will help decrease risk factors and rates of CVD. The restriction of total calorie consumption for a cyclical period of time, known as fasting has been shown to provide a plethora of benefits in humans including reductions in blood pressure, cholesterol content, body fat, glycemic control, and insulin levels. Exogenous ketone supplementation has been proposed to have similar effects to fasting and may be a more practical alternative. Therefore, further investigation using exercise in combination with fasting and/or ketone supplementation may allow for a synergistic effect in sedentary individuals for improving general health, cardiovascular function, and CVD risk factors. Elucidation of the overall health and cardiovascular benefits of fasting and/or ketone supplementation in combination with exercise will provide insight on a simple lifestyle change that could help reduce risk factors associated with the development of CVD and other age-related diseases.
