Caspase-9 as a nodal point connecting necrotic and apoptotic cell death in myocardial infarction
Description: The canonical role of caspase-9 is to mediate apoptosis. We have discovered a new pathway in which caspase- 9 mediates necrosis. Our in vivo data suggest that this pathway is important in cardiomyocyte death during myocardial infarction with reperfusion. This project delineates key aspects of the pathway and investigates whether its therapeutic inhibition could provide the basis for a new therapy to limit cardiac damage during myocardial infarction.
