Regulation of Mitochondrial Gene Expression and Function by GDF11 Signaling
Description: RELEVANCE STATEMENT. This application proposes to investigate the regulation of mitochondrial metabolism and function by the myokine Myoglianin during aging in Drosophila. Because Myoglianin has high sequence similarity to GDF11 (which has been shown to delay tissue aging in mice), these studies will provide important new understanding of the signaling cascade and the mechanisms by which GDF11-like signaling regulates aging. Aging is the main risk factor for many metabolic and degenerative diseases and therefore understanding how GDF11 delays tissue aging will highlight new molecular targets and mechanisms for the treatment of age-related diseases in humans.
