Methylglyoxal drives astrocyte senescence to mediate neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE The proposed research is relevant to public health because it focuses on developing a new and alternative strategy to treat Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by eliminating senescent astrocytes that contribute to inflammation and neurodegeneration. We will achieve this by determining the role of the glycolytic by-product methylglyoxal in driving astrocyte senescence and neurodegeneration in AD. These studies will develop novel therapeutic targets to inhibit cellular senescence in the brain and reduce the risk of AD.
