Nursing Strategies to Prevent Cognitive Decline in Hospitalized Aging Adultsvent Cognitive Decline in Hospitalized Older Adults

Description: Moderate-intensity exercise has been proven to improve cognitive functions such as memory and attention. Therefore, doing regular exercise is recommended to prevent dementia. However, it is difficult for many aging adults to engage in moderate-intensity exercise as part of their daily lives. The purpose of this study is to explore simple and easy exercises that older adults whose physical strength has declined can do. By measuring cerebral blood flow during these exercises, we can evaluate whether they improve cognitive function or not.We evaluated a finger exercise and a passive cycling exercise during the study period. The finger exercise revealed that it could increase cerebral blood flow. On the other hand, the passive cycling exercise did not show any significant difference in improving cognitive function. These results suggested that exercises involving muscle contraction are needed to activate brain function.
