MRI analysis of the influence of masticatory dysfunction on the human hippocampus
Description: We conducted the effect of occlusal support on hippocampal volume in humans. Occlusal support was classified into two groups: those with and those without occlusal support according to the Eichner classification. The volume of the hippocampus was automatically calculated from the MRI images by using image analysis software BAAD to automatically calculate the left and right, anterior and posterior volumes of the hippocampus.Significant differences were found in all regions of the hippocampus between elderly people without dementia and Alzheimer's patients. Furthermore, no significant difference was observed between the group with occlusal support and the group with occlusion restored using a prosthetic device. This was consistent with an epidemiological study that found that the risk of dementia due to the use of dentures is almost the same as that of people with dentate jaws. It was suggested that restoring occlusion using a prosthetic device may prevent hippocampal atrophy.
