Alzheimer Pathology and Neurovascular Dysfunction
Description: Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are leading causes of cognitive disability in the elderly that have a devastating impact on millions of lives in the US, while imposing a major burden on caregivers and on the economy of the whole health care system. The present application seeks to explore the novel hypothesis that tau, a major cause of damage in these diseases, exerts its deleterious effects on cognitive function by limiting the cerebral blood supply and starving the brain of oxygen. The findings deriving from the proposed studies will advance our knowledge of the vascular contributions to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and may suggest new therapies for these highly prevalent yet untreatable conditions.
