A prospective study of Southern Chinese dietary pattern, foods and nutrients with cardiovascular disease mortality

Description: Background: As Hong Kong Chinese have longest healthy life expectancies in the world, certain elements of a traditional Chinese diet may be contributing. It is vitally important to identify the protective elements of a traditional Chinese diet to facilitate the development of appropriate and culturally sensitive health promotion policies. Objectives: To identify a Southern Chinese dietary pattern and examine the association of the dietary patterns with cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and all-cause mortality. Hypothesis to be tested: (1) We hypothesize that Southern Chinese dietary pattern that is associated with lower risk of CVD mortality will be identified. (2) As the foods/nutrients intake is not affected by socioeconomic position in our setting, we also hypothesize that the association of foods or the calculated nutrients with cardiovascular mortality will be consistent with the results of the existing large randomized controlled trials or Mendelian randomization studies. Design and subjects: Prospective cohort study of 20,318 older southern Chinese people. Main outcome measures: Deaths from cardiovascular disease and all causes. Information on all cardiovascular deaths will be collected from the Guangzhou Medical Insurance Bureau and the Death Registry in Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (record linkage has been established). All causes of death will be confirmed by verbal autopsy following WHO procedures. Data analysis: reduced rank regression, principal components analysis and cluster analysis Expected results: An identified Southern Chinese dietary pattern is associated with a low cardiovascular disease risk, with similar effects regardless of obesity status or sex.
