The impact of stress on everyday memory performance in younger and older couples: A laboratory-based and real-life investigation
Description:
The goal of this project is to better understand how stress affects everyday memory and whether these effects differ between younger and older adults. A unique focus will be on couples, since close relationships are crucial when it comes to stress: partners can sometimes be a source of stress (for example, during conflicts) but also an important source of support when we feel stressed.

This project will combine laboratory-based experiments with observations in daily life to examine how (a) relationship conflict and (b) daily stress shape memory performance, as well as (c) the interplay between both partners’ stress and memory.

Close others play an important role in how well people age. This project will reveal when and how stress harms memory and identify relationship factors and behaviors (e.g., communication between partners) that may buffer these effects. As people live longer than ever, maintaining strong memory is crucial for living an independent and happy life as we age. Ultimately, this research will inform strategies to support healthy memory and resilience across the lifespan.
