Impact of Novel Rehabilitative Approaches FOR Dysphagia in Patients with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) frequently suffer from dysphagia, or swallowing dysfunction, that can lead to serious health consequences, including impaired oral intake, malnutrition, decreased quality of life, increased caregiver burden, and aspiration pneumonia. The proposed work will test the impact of two interventions, tongue strengthening and saliva substitute use, on swallowing- related outcomes in patients with mild-moderate ADRD. Additionally, interviews with African American ADRD patients and their caregivers will be conducted to identify important cultural adaptations for enhanced participation in future trials.
