Can neurotrophic factors enhance direct reprogramming to retinal ganglion cells and restore visual function?

Description: Glaucoma, is results from progressive retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death due to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Lowering IOP slows the disease but does not restore lost vision, highlighting the need for RGC regeneration. Although RGC can be regenerated in mammals, their function remains unknown. The optic nerve crush (ONC) model is a glaucoma disease model where RGCs die slowly over time, making the ONC model ideal for evaluating regenerated RGC. In this project, we aim to test the functionality of regenerated RGCs and to restore visual function in the ONC model.
