Multimorbidity and Polypharmacy: Examining Prevalence, Patterns and Impacts within National Datasets in Canada
Description: The increasing prevalence of multiple chronic conditions (multimorbidity) and multiple prescribed medications (polypharmacy) among populations requires further examination to understand the burden and impact. It is important to understand how patterns of multimorbidity and polypharmacy co-exist together, as well as how this coexistence can result in adverse health outcomes. The objective is to present the prevalence and patterns of the co-existence of multimorbidity and polypharmacy within two national datasets in Canada, as well as the impacts on health status and health care utilization for adults and older adults. This presentation will highlight the need for more nuanced understanding of the epidemiology of multimorbidity and polypharmacy in community and clinical settings, particularly how the co-occurrence of multimorbidity and polypharmacy may significantly impact the health status and health care use of adults and older adults throughout Canada. Learning Objectives: At the end of the presentation, participants will better understand the epidemiology of multimorbidity and polypharmacy among adults and older adults who are community-dwelling or primary health care patients in Canada.
