Stimulation of Retinal Regeneration
Description: NARRATIVE Since regeneration of new retinal neurons does not occur in people, trauma or diseases that destroy retinal neurons can lead to permanent visual impairment. In the last five years we have shown for the first time that it is possible to stimulate Muller glial cells to regenerate functional retinal neurons in adult mouse retina. This proposal outlines experiments to better understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the process of in vivo Muller glial mediated neurogenesis, and to determine the applicability of this approach for the treatment of retinal disease.
