Microbiota-targeted approaches to resolve dysbiosis-induced AD neuropathology following brain injury.
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a pathology associated with inflammation, tau phosphorylation, and amyloid accumulation. Many modulators of these neurodegenerative processes come from the interaction of the brain- gut-microbiome axis and the production of bacterial metabolites. Our central hypothesis is that gut microbiota dysbiosis after traumatic brain injury (TBI) contributes directly to the inflammatory response in AD brains and that precision microbiota therapy will restore dysbiosis and preserve protective gut signals in AD pathogenesis. Manipulating the gut microbiota could serve as a therapy for AD patients after TBI.
