Feasibility and acceptance of a multifactorial intervention to prevent dementia in people with type 2 diabetes and impaired cognitive function - a pilot study.

Description: Patients with both type 2 diabetes (T2D) and minor neurocognitive disorder (NCD) have a two-fold risk for major neurocognitive disorder (NCD; i.e. dementia) compared to those without T2D and minor NCD. Multifactorial lifestyle interventions may be key in preventing the development of major NCD in specific high-risk populations. We previously applied to the Swedish Research Council to obtain funding for a study with the hypothesis: A multifactorial intervention, comprising a Mediterranean diet, individualized physical exercise, and optimal personalized pharmacological treatment reduces the incidence of major NCD in patients with T2D combined with minor NCD. The Swedish Research Council evaluators recommended as a first step a pilot study to demonstrate feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy on intermediate parameters. We therefore now apply for funding for a one-year pilot study including 80 subjects with T2D and minor NCD randomized to either a multifactorial intervention or usual care at two primary care study sites (Umeå, Uppsala, 40 randomized at each site) to determine if the study design is feasible (recruitment rate, retention, adherence, logistics etc), acceptable by participants, and whether the intervention has an impact on intermediate parameters e.g. metabolic parameters, and memory function. The result will guide us in a forthcoming application for a full-scale nationwide study.
