Restoration of Impaired Awareness of Hypoglycemia U01 Consortium: University of Kentucky
Description: “Restoration of Impaired Awareness of Hypoglycemia U01 Consortium: University of Kentucky” Narrative For people with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) who must use insulin daily to stay alive, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is the rate limiting step in their goals to appropriately control their blood sugar and avoid long-term diabetes complications. People with T1D often develop an inability to sense when their blood sugar is low (known as “impaired awareness of hypoglycemia”) that increases their risk for life-threatening episodes of severe hypoglycemia. This grant application seeks to establish a 10-site clinical consortium to determine if advanced diabetes care technology coupled with intensive hypoglycemia avoidance education will improve their awareness of hypoglycemia and thus decrease their risk for life-threatening low blood sugar events.
