Characterizing the role of mitochondrial DNA mutations on retinal degeneration.
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE: Retinal degeneration is a biological phenomenon that drives the pathology of eye disorders such as age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and glaucoma. Mitochondrial dysfunction is a major contributor to these degenerative diseases that remains to be more thoroughly investigated. By analyzing specific mechanisms that lead to mitochondrial dysfunction in the retina and retinal pigment epithelium, I hope to better understand disease onset and reveal novel therapeutic targets to improve patient care.
