Research and mentoring program in shared decision making in the care of older adults
Description: Narrative: The benefits of cancer screening are uncertain for adults >75 years and there are known harms (e.g., anxiety due to false alarms and diagnosis and treatment of cancers that otherwise would never have caused problems in an older adult's lifetime); therefore, guidelines recommend that cancer screening decisions consider older adults' risk for cancer, 10-year life expectancy, and value and preferences. Yet, many adults >75 years are screened for cancer without being informed of the harms and with little chance of benefit; therefore, Dr. Schonberg's research and mentoring program aims to improve shared decision making around cancer screening among clinicians, older adults, and their involved family members. A NIA K24 would allow Dr. Schonberg to continue to build her patient oriented research program in shared decision making around cancer screening for older adults, to expand her mentorship program to prepare the next generation of aging researchers in shared decision making, and would help ensure broad implementation of her decision support tools thereby improving the care of older adults.
