A Learning Health System concept in northern Canada: sharing a framework for collaborative colorectal cancer screening transformation

Description: A Learning Health System concept could dramatically improve colorectal cancer screening in the Northwest Territories. Death from colorectal cancer in the Northwest Territories is double that of the rest of Canada and could be reduced with greater uptake and efficiency of colorectal cancer screening. Quality improvement initiatives are underway however, the difficulty is that screening is complicated by multiple environmental, sociocultural and health system factors which make it difficult to improve screening. Therefore, to make the required changes to screening requires a team of informed stakeholders (clinicians, administrators, and patients) working together by sharing data, evidence, and initiatives to mobilize change. This is also known as a Learning Health System (LHS). Applying the concept of a LHS requires stakeholders understand the dimensions of a LHS and how to undertake a collaborative systems-based approach. Therefore, the purposes of this dissemination activity are: 1) for stakeholders to learn how to analyse healthcare from a systems perspective, 2) for stakeholders to understand the dimensions of a LHS and develop an approach for incorporating LHS concepts within the context of their work in the NWT, 3) to enhance the existing partnership between content experts and stakeholders by engaging in shared learning in order to apply LHS concepts in a way that enhances healthcare in the NWT. To accomplish these aims the investigators will host a two-day interactive workshop in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories followed by teleconference meetings for ongoing learning. We anticipate this workshop will establish a network of informed individuals with the skills to align and optimize their efforts to improve colorectal screening in the NWT. The skills they develop at this workshop could be transferred to other areas of healthcare across the NWT.
