Investigating the role of extremely long-lived mitochondrial proteins in mammalian neurons

Description: Neurological disorders are one of the most serious health problems facing modern society. The burden of these neurodegenerative diseases is growing inexorably with enormous economic and human costs. One of the hallmarks common across many neurodegenerative disorders is mitochondrial dysfunction. Here, we investigate newly discovered long-lived mitochondrial proteins, which persist throughout the life of the organism, and serve as a potential vulnerability point for mitochondrial damage and neuronal degeneration.
