Role of platelets in periodontal bone remodeling.
Description: Narrative: According to report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 46% of the U.S. adult populations aged 30 years and older have periodontitis of which pathogenesis and molecular mechanism underlying the impaired bone regenerative response remain elusive. While many varieties of immune cells and components were studied in periodontal immunopathology, only a few studies reported the presence of activated platelets in periodontitis. This study will establish 1) novel pathophysiological role of platelets in periodontitis, and, 2) elucidate the molecular mechanism that arrests bone regeneration in periodontitis in relation to platelet's possible pathogenic roles, based on insights gained from 1) and 2), 3) develop a new approach to improve the effects of platelet-based bone regeneration therapy in periodontitis.
