23-24 Master's Scholarship Application - Mirza
Description: By 2050, the global elderly population is expected to double, leading to increased comorbidities. Notably, anemia has been recognized as a public health concern affecting 164 million elderly. Reports from various countries indicate a high prevalence of the disease, especially in long-term care homes. Anemia is characterized by decreased hemoglobin levels and is linked to multiple conditions and worsened health outcomes including a decline in cognitive abilities. The anticipated rise in global dementia cases correlates with high anemia rates. Anemia's complex pathogenesis involves metabolic changes and potential accelerated red blood cell (RBC) loss. However, this cross-talk requires further research. The proposed study, aligning with CIHR's focus on Biological and Clinical Aspects of Aging, aims to investigate the relationship between anemia and cognitive decline in the elderly. We will conduct a cross-sectional analysis in a long-term care setting, hypothesizing a higher prevalence of anemia in elderly patients with cognitive issues. Data collection will involve health record access and laboratory analysis. We will conduct comprehensive RBC examination and metabolomics analysis to identify novel RBC and plasma metabolites altered in the elderly. Through our approach, we aim to identify correlations with other comorbidities, such as cardiovascular disease. This research aims to address the underdiagnosis of anemia and advance our understanding of the disorder within the geriatric scope. By working with gerontologists and hematologists, this interdisciplinary research aims to contribute insights into prognosis, enhancing quality of life, and reducing mortality risk.
