Personality and Mortality Risk in Adulthood: Behavioral and Physiological Mechanisms

Description: Project Narrative With increasing life expectancy and the baby-boom generation reaching older age, it is necessary to identify mechanisms that either promote or impede healthy aging and eventually intervene to improve health. The proposed research is significant because by identifying the mechanisms connecting personality to mortality risk, a blueprint can be developed of how personality leads to mortality that will be needed when developing interventions to combat premature aging. Once such interventions are refined and implemented, there is the promise that by targeting root causes of unhealthy behaviors and physiological dysregulation—personality— there will be widespread improvements in physical health, well-being, and longevity.
