Protective Factors of Cognitive Aging among Latinos in the 50 States and Puerto Rico
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Latinos living in the 50 United States (US) have about 1.5 times the risk of Alzheimer’s disease as non-Latino whites with Puerto Ricans representing the Latino background with the highest prevalence of mild cognitive impairment and cardiovascular disease risk factors, both long associated with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) risk. The overall research and training goals of this K01 center around investigating protective factors to promote healthy cognitive and brain aging in middle-aged and older Latinos (ages 45+) and expand work currently being conducted in the continental US to the US territory of Puerto Rico. Findings may inform the development of culturally-targeted interventions to support healthy cognitive and brain aging in Latinos, the largest racial/ethnic minority group in the US, with a particular focus on Puerto Ricans.
