Clinical and neuropathological correlations in the oldest-old: the BRAVO 90+ (BRAzilian Very Old 90+) study
Description: The Brazilian population is aging at an accelerated pace, with the age group of individuals aged 90 and over showing the greatest proportional growth among older adults. This population has a high rate of chronic degenerative diseases, among which dementia stands out due to its high prevalence and morbidity and mortality. However, few studies on dementia have been carried out in older people aged 90 and over. Most studies in this age group were carried out in high-income countries and suggest that the associations of risk factors for dementia and also the correlations between neuropathological lesions and cognitive symptoms seem to differ from the findings in younger older people. Furthermore, previous studies were carried out in samples predominantly of white participants, with no evidence in racially diverse samples. This project will describe the sociodemographic, clinical and neuropathological characteristics of 275 nonagenarian and centenarian individuals from the Biobank for Aging Studies, which is the largest brain bank in Latin America. We will analyze the associations of these characteristics with the cognitive abilities of these individuals. Our study will be the first study of clinicopathological correlations in the oldest old people in a racially diverse sample. (AU)
