Distinct functions of adipocyte-derived FGF21 in obesity

Description: FGF21 is a particular hormone that is made by fat cells that may be important for the development of obesity, which is currently a major public health burden. The objectives of this proposal are to examine how FGF21 released from fat cells modulates the harmful metabolic effects of obesity, and whether FGF21 released from fat is different from FGF21 derived from other parts of the body such as the liver, where it is known to exert beneficial effects on health. Strategies to specifically target FGF21 released from fat cells could lead to new therapies to combat obesity.
