Impact and Implications of concurrent hearing and vision impairment on risk for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias and social isolation in older adults
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE The proposed project will be one of the first to examine the impact of concurrent hearing and vision impairment (dual sensory impairment) on risk for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), social isolation, and cognitive training intervention efficacy. Using longitudinal, epidemiologic, data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) and intervention data from the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) Study, this study will provide a more comprehensive understanding of how potentially modifiable sensory and social factors impact ADRD risk and intervention outcomes. Findings may support inclusion of sensory impairment in future multi-domain ADRD interventions and accommodation for sensory impairment in other interventions that promote health in older adults.
