The wandering nerve: gateway to boost Alzheimer's disease related cognitive performance
Description: NARRATIVE The proposed research will apply transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation, a non-invasive brain stimulation method that modulates a system in the brain that is initially affected by Alzheimer's disease pathology and enhances memory performance, and thus may hold the key to successfully delay this disease in its earliest stages. We will assess the duration and extent of improvements in cognitive performance, and will identify individual, brain physiology and Alzheimer's disease-related factors that contribute to its success in older individuals without clinical impairment, including those at risk for Alzheimer's disease. This project has important public health implications as it gathers critical information to identify the target population, and to inform designs of future clinical trials aimed at prevention of Alzheimer's disease.
