Time restricted eating for prevention of age-related vascular cognitive decline in older adults
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Normal cognitive function requires an adequate blood supply to support neuronal activity via neurovascular coupling, and recent evidence demonstrates that age-related cognitive decline that manifests in Alzheimer’s dis- ease and related dementias (ADRD) is directly linked to reduced neurovascular coupling (NVC) responses. Caloric restriction exerts multifaceted anti-aging and lifespan-extending effects and has been demonstrated to be an effec- tive nutritional intervention that can improve vascular health and cognitive function, however, adherence to caloric restriction remains a challenge and a translational barrier as most humans may not be able, or willing, to reduce their caloric intake by 30% over extended periods of time. Based on the abundant literature in the field, our pub- lished preclinical results and preliminary data in humans, these series of studies are designed to assess a clinically relevant lifestyle intervention of time restricted eating to improve endothelial function and NVC responses in com- munity dwelling older adults to prevent and, potentially to treat, age-related cognitive decline associated with ADRD.
