Muscle and Bone Growth in Aging
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE The musculoskeletal system declines with age, largely due to physical inactivity and the depletion of growth factors, which leads to muscle weakness and increased risk of bone fracture. Growth factors in the muscle-bone unit play a role in improving muscle and bone regeneration that are further enhanced when physical activity is resumed; however, little is known about the mechanisms of how muscle interacts with bone and vice versa. The purpose of this proposal is to aid in a smooth transition from pre-doctoral training on the muscle to post-doctoral training on the bone to delineate the biochemical mechanisms involved to increase muscle mass and function along with bone mass and strength, in order to improve the quality of life in the aging community.
