Stress, Epigenetics and Aging
Description: Project Narrative Socioeconomic status (SES) and social stress are increasingly recognized as important factors that shape the development of chronic diseases and aging-related illnesses, particularly among African Americans, who experience a disproportionate burden of disease. However, the pathways through which stress affects obesity the biological pathways related to health disparities are not fully understood, particularly at the cellular level, and most research to date has been cross-sectional and among samples that lack racial diversity. We propose to address these gaps by examining the independent and cumulative impact of both SES and social stress at multiple points across the life course in relation to DNA methylation (e.g. DNA methylation age, genome-wide methylation) and telomere length among a diverse sample of whites and African Americans, as well as forms of resilience and coping in response to these stressors.
