Comprehensive Analysis of Sedentary Time, Sedentary Patterns, Sedentary Behaviours, Physical Fitness, and Cardiovascular Health in Apparently Healthy Adults: Associations and Long-term Outcomes

Description: Sedentary behaviour (SB), considered a health behaviour risk and a major modifiable cardiovascular risk factor, negatively affects public health. Sedentary time (ST) may be carried out under various circumstances, differing in the relative cardiovascular risk, such as prolonged or short sedentary bouts, known as sedentary patterns (SP). Prolonged bouts are known to have more harmful effects, which may be attenuated by increasing physical activity. However, current ST and SP guidelines are limited and controversial. This project aims to study the relationship between ST, SP, and SB with cardiovascular health and the risk of cardiovascular events using updated robust tools and gold-standard assessment methods. Also, study whether physical fitness improves cardiovascular health despite SB, has not been thoroughly investigated yet. We propose enhancing SP guidelines, establishing specific ST thresholds, and investigating whether health adverse events are influenced by ST, SP and SB over a 7-year follow-up period.
