The planning and pilot study of MISSION-O - Menopausal impact of opportunistic salpingectomy for prevention of ovarian cancer

Description: Opportunistic salpingectomy (OS) is advocated to prevent epithelial ovarian cancer. The national "Hysterectomy and Opportunistic Salpingectomy" (HOPPSA) trial evaluates surgical safety and menopausal symptoms. However, data on impact of OS on menopausal age, is lacking.1,2,3 This is critical as early menopause has detrimental long-term health consequences. Functioning blood markers are the only way to measure menopause after hysterectomy.Aim: Conduct a pilot study to test the feasibility of blood sampling to estimate the impact of OS on menopausal age.P: Women in HOPPSAI: SalpingectomyC: No salpingectomyO: Age at menopausePlanning Study: The pilot study as well as the future MISSION-O study are nested in the ongoing HOPPSA trial and aims to estimate menopausal age by measuring Follicle Stimulating Hormone in blood samples drawn twice, 1-6 years post-surgery. Extensive public and patient involvement will be established to shape patient information, logistics, incentives, information campaigns, and address ethical issues. Ethical approval and collaboration with the "Healthcare Integrated Biobanking" (SIB) infrastructure and participating gynaecologists will be carried out.Importance: Recruitment for HOPPSA ends early 2025; pilot-testing MISSION-O by mid-2025 is essential to implement the main study in 2026 seizing the window of opportunity.[1]van Lieshout LAM, et al.
