Ameliorating Respiratory Neuromotor Dysfunctions in Aging and Alzheimer's Disease
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Respiratory dysfunctions (including those of the tongue, chest wall, abdominal diaphragm muscles) and increased incidence of airway infections are major contributors to morbidity and mortality in Alzheimer’s disease and aging. The exact mechanisms of how respiratory muscles are compromised with Alzheimer’s disease and aging is unknown, but likely involves all levels of the motor unit, the motor neuron pools in the brainstem and spinal cord and the skeletal muscle. This project will assess two major culprits in neural loss and muscle weakness at all levels of the motor system, investigating therapeutic strategies designed to mitigate the effects of synaptic dysfunction (SPG302) and mitochondrial disfunctions (edaravone).
