Epidemiology of multimorbidity in Indian population
Description: Key goals: To determine the incidence and predictors of multimorbidity, and study the common clusters of conditions, their determinants, longitudinal trends, as well as the health and economic impacts on the individual. Rationale: With increased longevity and the escalating burden of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), multimorbidity is increasing globally and in India. Notably, it is occurring at younger ages and among those with low socioeconomic status. Yet, data on its incidence, longitudinal trends, health and economic impacts are unavailable in India. Study design: Participants (≥40 years, N=5,784) from the CARRS cohort study (cohort 2) residing in Delhi and Chennai will be recruited. They will be followed up longitudinally twice during the course of this fellowship. Information will be collected on risk factors, disability, frailty, and healthcare costs. Biomarker assessments (on a subsample i.e for incidence calculation, N=2300), anthropometric, and blood pressure measurements will be undertaken. Impact: Findings from this study will provide hitherto unavailable contemporary data on the incidence, associated risk factors, longitudinal trends, health, and economic impacts of multimorbidity. This will help to elicit the determinants and causal pathways of multimorbidity which can be used to develop suitable context-specific, resource-sensitive integrated preventive and management strategies in India
