Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging: Application for Phase III CCNA Operations Centre

Description: CCNA was created in 2014 by CIHR to add a "top down" synergistic set of dementia research components to the usual individual "bottom up" grant applications funded by CIHR. CCNA has been remarkably successful over ten years. For this third phase of funding, we present a streamlined and transformed set of integrated programs as an Operations Centre Core. This focuses on the following key components: The COMPASS-ND subjects cohort, a unique national resource with over 1,150 deeply phenotyped individuals with various forms of dementia and pre-dementia states, will be extended in two ways: a) a full longitudinal assessment on each subject will be carried out to provide essential data on disease progression, and b) a new cohort of low education (and therefore, higher risk) individuals will be added. Both of these will immeasurably increase the value of the cohort. The Brain Health Pro prevention education program, a novel online education program developed in Phase II, will now be validated to establish that it can indeed lower dementia risk in older Canadians. The program will be administered a) alone, b) in special settings of rural and lower SES populations, c) adapted for Indigenous Communities, and d) tested for increased efficacy when face-to-face coaching and counseling support are added. All of these are important steps towards an effective national dementia prevention program. A Dementia Research Support Hub will replace the previous cross-cutting programs, and bring together programs on a) Engagement of People with Lived Experience of Dementia, b) Training and Capacity Building, c) Knowledge Mobilization, d) Indigenous Cognitive Health, and on e) Women Sex Gender and Dementia. Additional teams for administration, data management, and neuroimaging will also be established to support these endeavors. Overall this transformed CCNA holds tremendous promise for becoming a dynamic engine to catalyze dementia research in Canada.
