Improving chronic musculoskeletal pain in community-dwelling elderly: a muscle strengthening exercise based pain management program for elders
Description: Chronic musculoskeletal pain is very common in community dwelling elderly, with varying impact on functional, psychological and social impairment, with enormous economic burden to the global health care system. Apart from degeneration and arthritis, muscle imbalance and core muscle instability are found to be associated with widespread musculoskeletal pain. Physical activity is a well-documented therapeutic modality for chronic pain conditions with beneficial effects on pain, sleep, cognitive function, and physical function. The objectives of this project are to enhance the understanding and to reduce the severity of chronic musculoskeletal pain of older adults through community education and intervention programmes. Effectiveness of a tailor-made muscle strengthening exercise programme for our elderly will be evaluated. The project can lead to better awareness, understanding and self- management of chronic musculoskeletal pain for our community dwelling elderly.
