Role of altered gut immune response in Lewy Body Disease
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE The physical, emotional, and societal costs of Lewy body diseases (LBD), including Parkinson’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, will increase over the coming decades as more of us live longer; in fact, the number of people with LBD is expected to double in the USA by the year 2040 unless we find safe and effective means to cure, delay onset, or slow progression of these diseases. Non-motor features, including gastrointestinal symptoms like constipation, are a common feature of LBD with serious subsequent impact on quality of life and caregiver burden. By determining the interplay between the gut microbiota and immune system, our project is focused on the clear imperative to understand the role of gut health in the pathogenesis of LBD.
