The complex role of phosphodiesterase 6 in rod photoreceptor health and function
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Congenital or acquired chronic, progressive retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and retinitis pigmentosa (RP) arise from disruptions in cellular and tissue homeostasis, leading to visual impairment and eventual blindness. This research aims to investigate the functional and structural roles of phosphodiesterase 6 (PDE6) in rod photoreceptor cells, and hence how mutations in this vital protein are implicated in blinding diseases. Insights gained from analyzing this crucial protein component of phototransduction will significantly enhance our understanding of the consequences of its dysfunction in diseased states.
