I-TRUST: Implementation of Teleophthalmology in Rural Health Systems Study

Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Teleophthalmology using retinal cameras in primary care clinics has been shown to improve diabetic eye screening rates and visual outcomes, but remains greatly underutilized in the U.S. This multi-center randomized controlled trial proposes to test the effectiveness and generalizability of a promising implementation program (I- SITE: Implementation to Sustain Impact in Teleophthalmology) for sustaining increased diabetic eye screening rates using teleophthalmology in rural health systems. This research seeks to identify methods for successful integration of telemedicine technology into rural primary care workflows to prevent blindness from diabetes, the leading cause of blindness among working-age U.S. adults.
