The role of IGF-1 signaling in vascular smooth muscle cells in age-related vascular cognitive impairment and dementia
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE One of the most common causes of disability during aging is vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID), triggered by cerebral microbleed formation and other microvascular pathologies. The underlying mechanism includes age-related IGF-1 deficiency, which leads to vascular smooth muscle cell dysfunction, increased blood vessel fragility and development of cerebral microhemorrhages (CMH) in the aging brain. CMH can trigger neuroinflammation and consequent neuronal dysfunction, culminating in cognitive impairment and gait disorders, and understanding this sequence of events is critical for the development of effective therapies.
