Mechanisms of the signaling metabolite β-hydroxybutyrate in Alzheimer's disease and the aging brain

Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE A low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet replicates some of the biological features of fasting or dietary restriction, and like these has recently been shown to improve lifespan and age-related memory decline in laboratory mice. Ketogenic diets are also being investigated in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, although the mechanism by which it might work is unclear. This project will determine the specific mechanisms of ketogenic diet that improve memory both in normal aging and in Alzheimer's disease models, in order to create new therapies that target both the features of Alzheimer's disease and of the aging brain in which it occurs.
