Targeting Succinate Signaling Impedes Periodontitis Progression
Description: Diabetic patients are prone to develop periodontal disease, which involves adaptive immune response, osteoclastogenesis and bone loss. We found that hyperglycemia elevated the level of succinate, an intermediate metabolite, and succinate signaling through its receptor may dysregulate the oral microenvironment homeostasis to increase inflammation and bone loss. This study will reveal how succinate enhances periodontitis progression associated with diabetes and the efficacy of targeting succinate signaling in protecting periodontal bone loss.
