Modulation of Mitofusin Activity to Treat Heart Disease
Description: Mitochondria and endoplasmic/sarcoplasmic reticula are “organelles” (structures) in cells that regulate cell metabolism and cell death. We have devised molecules that regulate proteins called mitofusins to alter the physical and functional relationships among these organelles and, thereby, influence cell death and metabolism. We propose in this project to (a) delineate mechanisms by which mitofusin modulators impact heart muscle cell metabolism and cell death and (b) test whether mitofusin modulators provide new therapeutic strategies for myocardial infarction (“heart attack”) and heart failure, the two most common and lethal heart diseases.
